A Little Night Poem

A pen just dispenses ink,
But a pencil consumes itself.

It wears you out, this making and erasing.
Once you have spilt yourself out on the paper,
You excise the parts of you that don't work anymore.

And then you go back to work,
Shorter at both ends.
